Podcasting the Director’s Role

I got a delightful email from a fellow theatre maker sharing that someone was working on a mini podcast series for their senior project to support incoming university students. Each episode covers a different aspect of theatre with a panel of theatre professionals.

This was the coolest idea ever. And I asked if I could join in.

What occurred was a sixty minute, inspiring conversation on the role of the director through each stage of the process. Take a listen as Chris Canfield, Artistic Director of The Boise Bard Players and myself go through the director’s role and mindset from the first read to opening night, facilitated by podcast creator Ashley Peterson.

About the podcast creator:

Ashley Peterson is a 45 y/o male who is about to finally graduate with their first Bachelors degree in Theatre Arts. After taking an unintended 17 year break from school, he feels pretty grateful for the Cheney and all those that have made this outcome possible.

He has many years experience in academic and community theatre having worked in nearly every position both front and back stage — sound, lights, and set building; acting and directing from Tartuffe to Souls' Nest to Pirates of Penzance and more. He is experienced and trained in Improvisational Theatre and teaches improv groups.

After graduation, Ashley plans to pursue a Masters in Teaching and a Masters in Marriage, Family, and Individual Counseling.

We'll see where my theatrical career takes me and what opportunities come my way.
